| DEBATING Definition: The activity of formally discussing an issue publicly, in which there are speakers expressing different and opposing opinions. ______________________________________________________________________ * All fourteen elements should be in. 1. Purposeful (to emphasize). 2. Considered necessary to publicly discuss issue. ________ 3. Subject or topic is introduced. 4. Organizers (= judge(s), timekeeper, recorder, etc.) are introduced. ________ 5. Format of intended activities is announced and agreed on. (And conduct of participants is as agreed when debate starts.) 6. Debaters are introduced or they do self-introductions. ________ 7. Proposer(s) ('for') starts the discussion. 8. Opposer(s) ('against') states position. ________ 9. Proposer responds to opposition's position. 10. Opposer counters reaction (= response) by proposer. ________ 11. Summaries are made by both or all sides to the debate. 12. Conclusions, as appropriate, are made and results or votes are announced promptly. ________ 13. Something new about the subject debated, is learned by all present, who listened to the arguments, or by all who read the proceedings of the discussions. 14.
