Definitions:

i. A barrier that is built across a river in order to stop the water from flowing, used especially to make a reservoir (= a lake for storing water) or to produce electricity.

ii. A barrier constructed to hold back a flow of water in order to raise its level.

iii. A reservoir of water held back by a barrier constructed to hold back its flow (and used for controlling navigation, supplying towns and villages, irrigating the land, or providing electrical energy).
