D NOTICE

Definitions:

i. Definition: (British English) A government notice sent to newspapers telling them that they must not publish particular information about something, for reasons of national security.

ii. (British) Request by British government to newspapers that certain information not be published in the national interest.

* But what does that 'D' mean?!


Danger? 1. Purposeful and believed vital to make request (see definition).

Demonic? 2. Information is already in the possession of the newspaper houses.

Damage? 3. Sent out early, to the right newspapers and acknowledged received.

Dirty? Deal? 4. Tone of request will be appropriate - not threatening, but pleading.

Deadly? 5. Appreciated by the members of the fourth estate of the realm, and achieves goal(s).

Distraught? 6. Newspapers will make losses - fewer copy sales - as a result of patriotism.

Doomsday? 7. Government of the day will not lose the next election as a fallout of 'gagging' the press.
