| CONVERSATION STOPPER Definition: (informal) An unexpected or shocking remark, which people do not know how to reply to. ______________________________________________________________________ * All eight elements should be in. 1. Never deliberately planned by who made remark/comment! 2. Comment is especially instructive to hearer - whether information is stale or new. 3. Effect is unforeseen, therefore the reaction that follows is unprepared for (connect to #1 & #5). 4. Remark changes the situation (= tone of discussion, approach, etc.) whenever conversation resumes, if it resumes. (Connect to #6.) 5. Provides an 'ammunition', gives an advantage, etc. for either of the parties involved in conversation. 6. Response (= reply) would be given sometimes in the future! (Connect to #7, to emphasize.) 7. Not a word is uttered after remark (to emphasize, see definition). 8.
