CLEMENCY (1)

Definition: (formal) Kindness shown to somebody when they are being punished; willingness not to punish somebody so severely.

1. Purposeful and necessary for who shows this.

2. Requested by the person being punished - not on his or her behalf. And never given unsolicited.

3. Mercy is deserved, in the opinion of person punishing another.

4. Kindness is shown timely.

5. Punishment that is made less severe is not a 'favorite' activity or preferred 'hobby' of the criminal.

6. Reduction or gentleness is of the appropriate measure and duration, in the estimation of person serving punishment (connect to #5, to emphasize).

7. Person being punished, and benefiting from kindness, is truly guilty - not a victim of a miscarriage of justice.

8. Kindness serves purpose(s), whatever this/these is/are.

9. Recipient of kindness is grateful and appreciative (connect to #7).

10. Kindness is not regretted by the benevolent person(s). That is, criminal does not repeat the same offence afterwards.
