CHROMOSPHERE (2)

Definition: (astronomy) A gaseous layer around a star that is similar to the colored, irregular incandescent layer of ionized and neutron gases (mostly hydrogen) surrounding the photosphere to a distance of about 3,000 miles. There are many small, transient, high-speed jets of gas ejected to heights reaching 10,000 miles from the low chromosphere. The temperature of the chromosphere increases with distance outward, reaching 20,000 degrees Celsius in the upper photosphere.
