CHESTNUT (5)

Definition: (usually - old chestnut) (informal) An old joke or story that has been told so many times that it is no longer amusing or interesting.

1. Purposeful and necessary, though not intended or hoped by storyteller to be not amusing.

2. Joker or storyteller is unaware that joke or story had been earlier told to and/or heard by the audience (connect to #5).

3. Old joke or story was initially truly funny or interesting (to emphasize, see definition).

4. Joke or story was listened to till the end or conclusion.

5. Person telling joke or story is doing so for the first time. That is boring joke or story that fails to amuse had been heard previously from some other speaker(s).

6. Joke or story was not booed and there was no slow handclap by audience or listener(s) (connect to #3). (And joker or storyteller does not laugh at the joke or story he or she is telling.)

7. Regretted by listener(s) because time spent listening to 'joke' or 'story' could have been used for something more beneficial or productive.

8. Joke or story is not forgotten and can be told to others in the future who it is certain have not heard funny or amusing tales.
