| CHARGE D'AFFAIRES (1) Definition: (from French) An official who takes the place of an ambassador in a foreign country when he or she is away. ______________________________________________________________________ * All nine or ten elements, as applicable, should be in. 1. Purposeful and necessary - to provide leadership. 2. Does not move into the office of the substantive ambassador! 3. Does not address himself or herself, or self-appoint his or her person as the ambassador, especially in correspondences. (Unless specifically appointed, this person is not an acting ambassador!) _____________ 4. Knows specific roles expected in the new capacity/position. 5. Performs functions effectively and efficiently (connect to #4). 6. Previous responsibilities, if person is a staff of the embassy or high commission, etc. are handed over to another staff, as necessary. Does not do anything deliberately to delay the ambassador's scheduled return to duty station. 8. Hands over timely to ambassador on his or her return. 9.
