Definition: (British English) The way that a writer makes characters in a book or play seem real.

* All six elements should be in.


1. Purposeful and necessary.

2. Description given is vivid.

3. Storyline or script has a quality of seeming real or realistic. That is, acts or actions participated in by the characters are 'live'.

4. Vividness of description is to the minutest details, but without a whiff of exaggeration. That is, presentation is not a caricature.

5. Characters in play, book, etc. are portrayed as smart, active, sharp-witted, emotive and/or responsive.

6. Manner of portrayal serves purpose(s) for the writer/producer, etc. not necessarily for the hearer(s)/reader(s)/listener(s).
