Mashing
MASHING

Definitions:

i. (in brewing and distilling) The process of combining a mix of ground grains - typically malted barley with supplementary grains such as corn, sorghum, rye, or wheat - known as the "grain bill" with water and then heating the mixture.

ii. The term given to the start of the brewing process, where crushed grains are mixed with water to form a porridge-like mixture called the "mash".

iii. A step in the brewing process that combines crushed malts with hot water in a mash tun to convert complex starches into simple sugars that are more readily fermented.
