3. Efforts put into the attempt are genuine, honest - not aided by illegalities and/or 'tricks' and/or ... .

4. Person ahead is 'waiting'. That is, person with lead is 'resting' on his or her oars, not making further, serious progress.

PUT MORE EFFORTS. (hard work)

5. You do not do a thing to sabotage the person ahead, thereby slowing him/her down (connect #3 & #4).

6. No excessive 'energy' is used during pursuit that might lead to unpleasant and undesired consequences, such as an excessive exhaustion, unconsciousness, etc. afterwards.

REDOUBLE YOUR EFFORTS, IF NECESSARY. (perseverance)

7. Effort pays off. That is, person ahead is caught up with, at the stage and time hoped or planned for.

8. You stay on the same level or retain the same standard on meeting person who was ahead. That is, you do not go below the new level or standard without a valid reason. (And you may even, thereafter, leave the new 'mate' behind, if you choose.) In other words, achievement can be sustained for duration desired.
