| CARROT AND STICK Definitions: i. [idiomatic - the carrot and (the) stick (approach)] If you use the carrot and stick approach, you persuade somebody to try harder by offering them a reward if they do, or a punishment if they do not. ii. If an organization has a carrot and stick approach or policy, they offer people things in order to persuade them to do something and punish them if they refuse to do it. ______________________________________________________________________ * All six elements should be in. 1. Considered purposeful and necessary to adopt method. 2. Person or organization had tried other means that did not achieve intended objective(s) of having particular thing done. 3. Offer of 'profit' (= reward) and 'loss' (= punishment) will be simultaneously made. That is, who is being persuaded will know, as offer is presented, the consequence(s) of agreeing or refusing. 4. The nature and features of request and reward will not be of illegalities, immoralities, etc. That is, carrot will be 'dangerously appetizing' and stick 'alluringly stingy'. 5. Readiness or willingness, ability or capacity to back up claim (= offer) will be present. That is, the wherewithal can be provided to help person do thing and the gains to be given will be immediately on accomplishing task. In other words, 'fruit' and 'weapon' will be visibly 'dangled' and competently 'waved'. 6. Achieves positive goal(s), whatever this/these is/are, as hoped for.
