| CARRIAGEWAY (1) Definition: (British English) One of the two sides of a motorway or other large road, used by traffic moving in the same direction. ______________________________________________________________________ * All ten elements should be in. 1. Purposeful, whether of a single, dual, triple or multiple lanes. 2. Well-built or constructed, with drainage or bridges, bus stops, protectors or barriers, 'U-turns', flyovers and underpasses, and of the same level/height as the other side, etc. as necessary or applicable. __________________ SOUTHBOUND ... . (whatever its length and number of lanes). 3. Side has appropriate markings to demarcate lanes, specify traffic islands, bicycle or pedestrian lanes, etc., as applicable. 4. Side is never turned into a two-way, one-lane road without justification (= emergency, repairs(?), etc.) __________________ EASTBOUND ... . (Hit the road.) 5. Side has correct and readable signs, appropriate and functional lighting, etc. 6. Side has call boxes, rest areas, motorway services, etc. __________________ WESTBOUND ... . (Drive with care.) 7. Side has adequate numbers of lay-bys, etc. 8. Motorway or road is on a satellite navigator and/or a road map ! __________________ NORTHBOUND ... . (Safe journey.) 9. Completed. That is, side leads to a specific destination, not one under construction; a road to 'nowhere'! 10.
