Carnot cycle
CARNOT CYCLE

Definition: An ideal reversible heat transfer cycle involving a fluid (usually) as a working substance and consisting of an isothermal expansion, an adiabatic expansion, an isothermal compression and an adiabatic compression back to the original state, where each step is carried out reversibly. The Carnot cycle accomplishes the conversion of heat to work with the theoretical maximum efficiency and was historically important in the development of thermodynamics, particularly for the concept of entropy.
