Caretaker speech
CARETAKER SPEECH

Definition: (linguistics) A simple way of speaking that is used when talking to a child or other person who is learning to speak a language.

2. No verbosity or ... 'gargantuan' or 'frightening' words or gobbledegook ... in speech. (No need for learner to have or look for a dictionary or an encyclopedia!)

3. Manner of speaking is not deliberately obscurantist (not a time for a quiz or riddle).

4. Speed of speech is not rushed or hurried, but made slowly. (No time constraints.)

5. Manner of speech or delivery is not nonchalant. That is, way of talk and words chosen are not likely to lead to an interpretation of talk as meaningless or a joke, and therefore, not taken seriously.

6. Manner of talk does not include a refusal to repeat or reiterate or clarify a point/word/phrase, etc., if need be (connect to #4 & #5).

7. Voice, pitch, etc. levels are adequate to be audible for hearer/learner. And accent is not made specifically difficult.

8. Speech includes 'the good, the bad and the ugly'. That is, talk does not exclude area(s) considered as 'no-go'! (To emphasize.)

9. A sentence, phrase, statement, etc. is never stopped halfway, before it is completed or said in full (to emphasize, see definition).

10. Simplicity achieves objectives - beginner learns the language.
