BACK-RUNNER

Definition: (informal) A person, an animal or organisation that seems most likely to lose a race or competition in the last position.

1. Trained, prepared, etc., but not as well as the front-runner(s).

2. Started out on the same footing as the other competitor(s).

3. Intended on starting out to do really well (connect to #4).

4. Efforts put in is maximum though not generally good enough.

5. Surely gives up on catching up before end of a competition.

6. Clearly going to have an excuse for a poor or weak showing.

7. Suffers considerable loss as a direct consequence of doing.

8. Benefits nothing therefrom or thereafter - no saving grace.

9. Smartly going to learn some lesson as a result of the failure.

10. Result of race, etc., is not going to be cancelled or changed.
