QUENCHING

Definitions:

i. In material science, quenching is the rapid cooling of a workpiece in water, oil or air to obtain certain material properties.

ii. A rapid way of bringing a metal back to room temperature after heat treatment to prevent the cooling process from dramatically changing the metal's microstructure.

iii. The decrease in the observed fluorescence intensity as a result of interaction of the ground or excited states of a fluorophore with other species in solution.
